CLEANSING SERVICES

Cleansing of Streets and Open Areas

This cleansing section is responsible for sweeping clean all streets and open areas.  However for this to be achievable and meaningful, it requires the support and understanding of the general public not to just litter indiscriminately deliberately just because there are people to sweep.  We also expect the public to dispose their litter in a responsible manner in dustbins, skips and any places that are designated by the Council as disposal points or containers.

Refuse Collection and Disposal

Lilongwe City Council provides waste collection services to commercial, residential and industrial institutions.
Lilongwe City Council has waste removing trucks of two types: Skip carriers and waste compactors.

Arrangement 1

Every household is requested to possess a waste bin in which the residents should put all their litter.  Refuse compactors go along location streets to empty all the waste bins that have been presented along it by the owners.

Arrangement 2

      • Waste skips are put in public places such as markets and open grounds where the public is expected to drop their litter and waste.
      • Street cleaners are deployed to sweep public places and streets, collect the waste and put in the skips.
      • Skip carrier trucks remove the waste skips and off-load the waste at the dump site.

Litter containers/refuse bins

The section has a responsibility to provide appropriate containers to be used by the public only in public places.  The residents are required to possess a bin in their houses or premises where they drop all their domestic or commercial/industrial refuse.  The department has the duty to come and collect the filled containers for disposal at the designated dump site.

Public Toilets

The Council has a responsibility to build public convenient places for the public to use.  However, due to problem of irresponsible behaviour of the public these buildings are put in private hands to ensure security and proper use.

Cemeteries Services

The section has a responsibility to provide space at a designated site for burial of dead bodies.  This is done either at a fee – where special assistance is provided and for free – where no special assistance is given.  The former is done at a fee-paying cemetery while the latter is done at a free non-paying cemetery.
